The world’s largest Orang Utan Sanctuary, which covers an area of 4,294ha., is a very much virgin rainforest. Orphaned and injured Orang Utans are brought to Sepilok to be rehabilitated before returning to their forest life. Sepilok is a primary lowland forest and a fine showcase of Borneo’s remaining rainforest. While orang utan rehabilitation is still the main goal at the centre, it also focuses upon public education on conservation, research and assistance on other endangered species such as the rhinoceros.
From Sandakan airport, it takes around 30 minutes by car to reach the Rehabilitation centre. Sandakan, formally the capital city of North Borneo, was a busy port exporting logs and timber that caters worldwide needs.
0830: Arrive Sandakan airport, proceed to Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre in time for the morning feeding at 10am.
1200: Stop over at local restaurant Sandakan town for lunch.
1300: After lunch at local restaurant, a short city tour of Sandakan town – where you will visit the wet market at Sim Sim Water Village, Buddhist Chinese Temple.
1500: Transfer to airport for your return flight to Kota Kinabalu (suggest to book flight departs mid-afternoon or late afternoon). Upon arrival at Kota KinabaluAirport, transfer back to hotel.
